April 12th, 2022 by

Here at Eskridge Chevrolet, we love living and working in Guthrie, Oklahoma, with its friendly residents, great coffee shops, and natural beauty. Our town has a wide range of activities for the whole family, from museums and hiking trails to rodeo shows. Read on to learn about five family-friendly activities in the Guthrie area.

Learn About Local History at the Oklahoma Territorial Museum

Guthrie is home to the Oklahoma Territorial Museum, an educational center dedicated to preserving the history of the state of Oklahoma. Located on East Oklahoma Avenue, the museum has a range of exhibits that teach visitors about the lives of early settlers. For example, “Opportunity Awaits: The African-American Experience in Territorial Oklahoma,” traces the settlement of African-American settlers in Oklahoma after the Civil War.

The Oklahoma Territorial Museum is a great family activity for both sunny and rainy days. The museum is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesdays through Saturdays. You can contact the museum staff in advance if you’d like to book a tour with a guide who can provide additional information about the museum’s exhibits. Tours and educational activities have additional costs, while a general admission ticket gets you self-guided access to all exhibits. Here are the admission prices for the Oklahoma Territorial Museum:

  • $7 for adults aged 19 to 54
  • $5 for seniors over the age of 65
  • $4 for children aged 6 to 18

See a Rodeo at Lazy E Arena

Lazy E Arena, located in southeast Guthrie, is an event space for rodeos, shooting championships, and other Western-style competitions. Founded in 1984, the arena has hosted a wide range of events for almost 40 years, hosting about 40 events per year. Some of the events, like the World Championship Junior Rodeo, feature local contestants. If you’ve never been to a rodeo before, this is a great opportunity for you and your family to learn about a longstanding Western tradition.

Prices for different shows vary, and you can buy tickets to the arena’s rodeo shows at ticketmaster. For some events, like the Cinched Time Event Championship, the arena hosts a trade show for local vendors, giving you the opportunity to buy Western goods from local vendors. You can buy everything from saddles to handmade toys to sterling silver jewelry at the trade show.

Paddle Around in Liberty Lake

If you’re looking for a fun way to spend a beautiful day, take a drive over to Liberty Lake, just southwest of downtown Guthrie. The lake covers 167 acres, with over 5 miles of shoreline. Its natural beauty and recreational activities make it a great family destination. The park allows leashed dogs and horses in marked areas, so you can bring your furry friends with you on your lake trip. You can choose to spend a day on the lake or camp overnight at one of the 20 primitive campsites.

The lake offers recreational activities both onshore and in the water. You can hike on 6.2 miles of trail along the shoreline and in the surrounding wood. Some trail areas are restricted to pedestrians only, while others allow horses as well. On warm days, you can swim in the lake or take a boat out from the boat launch site for paddling or fishing. Finish up the day with a cookout at one of the lake’s provided grills. Admission is $3 per person.

Get Out Your Blades at Arctic Edge Ice Arena

Located a half-hour drive from downtown Guthrie in Edmond, Arctic Edge Ice Arena is an indoor ice skating and recreational complex for adults and children. This is the perfect place to practice your skating skills or learn how to ice skate. If you and your family already know how to ice skate, you might be interested in the public skating hours. Arctic Edge Ice Arena hosts public skating hours for several hours every day, including some afternoon and evening times. You can view the public skate hours schedule on their website. Admission for public skating is $12 per visit.

If you’re interested in learning to skate, Arctic Edge Ice Arena offers classes for all ages. You might be interested in a group class, a specialty clinic, or a private lesson. The facility also offers lessons in hockey, curling, and figure skating. Class and individual training rates might vary depending on the level of instruction and frequency of lessons. Arctic Edge Ice Arena also hosts a summer day camp for children, where they focus on different indoor sports every week.

Have a Blast at Kid’s Galaxy Indoor Playground

If you have younger children, Kid’s Galaxy Indoor Playground might be an excellent way to spend a day, especially if the weather isn’t great for playing outdoors. Located half an hour from Guthrie in Edmond, Kid’s Galaxy Indoor Playground offers family entertainment and activities designed for children aged 12 and under. The facility includes playground equipment, an arcade, and a special toddler play area. You can finish up your playdate with a slice of pizza from the cafe.

Standard admission to Kid’s Galaxy Indoor Playground includes unlimited play for the day you visit, as long as you don’t leave and re-enter. The facility has special prices for certain days as well. For example, on Toddler Tuesday, children aged 1 to 5 get a special discount. You can also host parties there or take advantage of a membership for reduced admission.
